Polarized vs Non-Polarized Sunglasses

What polarized lenses do, who needs them, and how they differ from standard tinted lenses. Plus what our fashion lenses are and are not.

What polarized lenses do

Polarized lenses have a special filter that reduces glare from flat, reflective surfaces such as water, wet roads and snow. This can make bright scenes more comfortable to look at.

What standard tinted lenses do

A tint darkens what you see so bright light feels more comfortable. It does not by itself reduce reflected glare in the way a polarizing filter does, and it does not tell you how much UV is blocked.

Who may prefer polarized

People who spend long hours on the water, driving in strong glare, fishing or skiing often choose polarized lenses made for that use. Check the product listing for the stated specification.

A few downsides

Polarized lenses can make some phone and car screens look dim or patchy. Some people dislike the look.

What our sunglasses are

Our sunglasses are fashion glasses with non-prescription lenses. We do not describe them as polarized and we make no UV protection claims. See are cheap sunglasses safe?.

Choosing for style

If you are choosing a pair for looks, start with shape and color. See the face shape guide and the lens color guide.

Quick checklist

Decide whether you need glare control for water, driving or snow. If you do, buy lenses that state polarization on the listing. If you are choosing for style, any shape works.

Common questions

Are polarized lenses safer? A polarizing filter is not the same as UV protection, so look for both claims separately. Do I need them for everyday wear? Not necessarily.
